Your first shipment sets the tone for the whole relationship. Agree on these points in writing before production starts.
- The incoterm. FOB is the most common choice: the supplier handles export customs and loading, and you take over at the port.
- The packing list. Cartons, pallets, labels and the language printed on them.
- Quality checks. Who inspects the goods before loading, and against which specification.
- Documents. Commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and any health certificates.
- Payment terms. Deposit and balance, or a letter of credit.
- Shipping window. The week the container should leave, with a margin for port delays.
- Insurance. Who covers the goods during the voyage.
